Comment
|
Ailnoth identifies himself as an Englishman of Canterbury who, at the time of the composition of his Gesta Swenomagni et Passio Canuti, says he had been in Denmark for 24 years. His work evidences a clear hostility towards the Normans. In spite of his sympathy for the idea of a Danish reconquest of England, he deplored the rude state of Christianity among the Danes (although he found them better than the other peoples of the north) and argued for the need for strict Christian kingship that was not afraid to correct error, even in the face of popular resentment. He draws on Abbo of Fleury's depiction of Scandinavia as a barren place, whose harsh environment bred cruel and violent people.
