Quotation Trecenti enim Waringi in eadem urbe habitabant, custodes ab imperatore deputati, quorum praesidio et opere non minimum defensabatur. Translation Three hundred Varangians were stationed in that city, sent there to guard it by the emperor, and their work and vigilance contributed not a little to the defence. But when they saw our men persisting in the attack, and fearing that siege engines would appear which would hasten the city's fall (after which they foresaw that any treaty they might obtain for themselves would be on much worse terms), they made an agreement to surrender
