Exinde collecta ex omni exercitu electorum militum manu Rothun Danorum urbem adiit; sed difficultate locorum asperiorique hieme ingruente, plaga eos quidem magna percussit, incolumi exercitu infecto negotio post tres menses Saxoniam regressus est, urbibus Remense atque Lugduno cum caeteris armis captis Hluthowico regi concessis. |
Translation |
The king then chose a picked force of soldiers from the entire army and marched to Rouen, the city of the Danes. However, the difficulty of the region, and the onslaught of harsh winter weather battered them. So, after three months, the still strong and healthy army returned to Saxony with their work incomplete. The cities of Rheims and Laon, as well as the others that were captured by their arms, were handed over to King Louis. (Trans. Bacharach, p. 102) |
