Ἀλλ᾿ ἐπεὶ πεϱὶ τῶν Σϰυϑῶν τῶν πϱὸς τῷ Καυϰάσῳ τῶν τε πϱὸς βοϱϱᾶν τετϱαμμένων μνήμην ἐποιησάμεϑα, φέϱε δή, φέϱε τὰ παϱηϰολουϑηϰότα ϰατὰ τούτους τοὺς χϱόνους τοῖς μεγίστοις ἔϑνεσι τούτοις ὥσπεϱ ἐμβόλιμά τινα διηγήματα τὴν ἱστοϱίαν μεσολαβήσαντες παϱαϑώμεϑα. ϑέϱους ἐνεστῶτος ϰατὰ τοῦτον δὴ τὸν ἐνιαυτὸν ὁ πϱὸς τῇ ἕῳ ὑπὸ τῶν Τούϱϰων Χαγάνος ὑμνούμενος πϱέσβεις ἐξέπεμψε Μαυϱιϰίῳ τῷ αὐτιϰϱάτοϱι, ἐπιστολήν τε συντεταχὼς ἐπινίϰια ἐνεχάϱαττεν ἐν αὐτῇ. |

7.7.6-7 (p. 188): But since we have made reference to the Scythians (Skúthai), both those in the Caucasus and those who face northwards, come then, come, let us interrupt our history and present, like an intercalated narrative, the events which attended these very great nations (megístai éthnē) during these times. When summer had arrived in this particular year, he who is celebrated by the Turks (Toȗrkoi) as Chagan (Khagános) in the east, dispatched ambassadors to the emperor Maurice; he composed a letter and inscribed in it victory-praises. |
