Translation He also made the Northmen and Danes submissive through force of arms. After they had been recalled from their ancient error, along with Cnut, their king, he taught them to bear the yoke of Christ. Because I have heard marvellous things about their ancient sacrifices, I will not allow these to pass by unmentioned. In those parts, the centre of the kingdom is a place called Lejre, in the region of Seeland. Every nine years, in the month of January, after the day on which we celebrate the appearance of the Lord, they all convene here and offer their gods a burnt offering of ninety-nine human being in the place of hawks. As I have said, they were convinced that these would do service for tmem with those who dwell beneath the earth when he forbade them to practise such an execrable rite. The only sacrifice acceptable to God the Father is that which refrains from spilling human blood. Indeed, the Lord declared: you should not kill the innocent and pious. (Trans. Warner, p. 80)
