Translation Therefore I, the most noble Grimwald, king of the Lombard gens [people], with the help of God in the sixth year of my reign, in the month of July, in the eleventh indiction, with the advice and consent of our iudices [judges] and of all the people have undertaken to amend those provisions of this code that seem harsh and unjust, and to bring them to a better state of justice. (Emended from K. Fischer-Drew, trans., The Lombard Laws (1973), p. 131)
Summary The prologue to the additions made in the name of the Lombard King Grimwald begins by expressing a justification for emending and augmenting the Edictus Rothari. It then continues to introduce Grimwald as king of the Lombard gens [people], gives the date in which the laws were issued (July in the sixth year of his reign, that is 668 CE), and states the invovlement of the iudices [judges] in drawing up the laws.
