άπέστειλε δὲ στόλον πϱὸς τὸ ἀγαγεῖν ἐϰ Χαζαϱίας τὴν ἒαυτοῦ ζυναῖϰα, ϰαὶ πολλὰ σϰάφη ἐβυϑίσϑησαν σλυμψυχα. ἀϰούσας δὲ ὁ Χαγάνος δηλοῖ αὐτῷ· “ὦ ἀνόητε, οὐϰ ἔδει σε διὰ δύο ἥ τϱοῶν σϰαφῶν λαβεῖν σου τὴν γυναῖϰα, ϰαὶ μὴ ἀποϰτεῖναι τοσοῦτον πλῆϑος; ἰδὺ ἐτέϰϑη σοι ϰαὶ υἱός, ϰαὶ ἀπόστειλον, λάβε αὐτούς.” ὁ δὲ ἀποστείλας Θεοφύλαϰτον ϰουβιϰουλάϱιον ἤγαγε τὴν Θεοδώϱαν ϰαὶ Τιβέϱιον, τὸν υἱὸν αὐτῆς, ϰαὶ ἔστεχεν α’ὐτούς· ϰαὶ συνεβασίλευσαν αὐτῷ. |

He also sent a fleet to bring his wife from the land of the Chazars and many ships sank together with their crews. When the Chagan had heard of this, he sent him this message: ‘Oh fool, could you not have taken your wife on two or three ships without killing so great a multitude? Do you think that you are taking her, too, by war? Behold, a son has been born to you. Send your emissaries and take them away.’ So he sent the cubicularius Theophylaktos and brought Theodora and her son Tiberius and crowned them; and they reigned jointly with him. |
| Summary |
Justinian II is criticized by the khagan for sending a whole fleet to take home his wife Theodora, who has since borne him a son, Tiberius. Both are then taken to Constantinople and crowned, joining him in his reign. |
