But on the way there he received envoys from a number of people in Italy, inviting him to go there: his nephew Louis, they said, along with his wife and daughter, had been slain in Benevento by the Beneventans. (...) Louis king of Germany also reacted to the news of the death of his nephew the Emperor Louis: he dispatched his son Charles [the Fat] to the territory he held beyond the Jura Mountains, to bind as many men as he could to his allegiance by solemn oaths, and this young Charles duly did. |
Summary |
Charles the Bald is approached with news of the alleged death of his nephew, Louis II, and his wife and daughter at the hands of the Beneventans, and invited to come to Italy. Louis the German is also reported to have reacted to this rumour by sending his son Charles across the Jura mountains. |
