Quroum continentiam gestorum et temporum qui legis ita discernes: ab anno primo Theodosii Augusti in annum tertium Valentiniani Augusti Placidiae reginae filii ex supradicto a nobis conscripta sunt studio, uel ex scriptorum stilo uel ex relationibus indicantum. Exim immerirto adlectus ad episcopatus officium, non ignarus omnium miserabilis temporis erumnarum, et conclusi in angustias imperii Romani metas subdidimus ruituras et, quod est luctuosius intra extremam universi orbis Galleciam deformem ecclesiastici ordinis statum creationibus indiscretis, honestae libertatis interitum et universe propemodum in diuina disciplina religionis occasum ex furentium dominatione permixta iniquarum perturbatione nationum. Haec iam quidem inserta, sed posteris in temporibus quibus offenderint reliquimus consummanda. |

6. You who read this will make a distinction in the contents [of the account] of these deeds and chronologies thus: from the first year of Augustus Theodosius up to the third year of Augustus Valentinian, the son of Gall Placidia, I have written basing myself on the above-mentioned research, either written sources or the oral reports of my informants. From that point, having been undeservedly elected to the offcie of bishop and not unknowing of all the calamities of thsi wretched age, I have subjoined [an account of] the frontiers of the narrowly-confined Roman Empire that are doomed to persih, and, what is more lamentable, [an account of events] within Gallaecia at the edge of the entire world: the state of ecclesiatical succesion perverted by indiscrimminate appointments, the demise of honourable freedom, and the downfall of virtually all religion based on divine instruction, all as a result of the domination of herectics confounded with the disruption of hostile [barbarian] tribes. Such then are the contents of the present vo,lume, but I have left it to my successors [to include and account of] the Last days, at the time at which they encounter them. |
