(35) Alaricus rex Gothorum Romam ingressus. Cum intra et extra urbem caedes agerentur, omnibus indultum est qui ad sanctorum limina confugerunt. (36) Placidia, Theodosii filia, Honorii imperatoris soror, a Gothis in urba capta. (37) Alaricus moritur; cui Athauulfus succedit in regno. (38) Barbari qui in Hispanias ingressi fuerant caede depredantur hostili. (39) Pestilentia suas partes non segnius operatur. |

a. 409 (34) The Alans, Vandals, and Sueves entered Spain in [the year] 447 [ of the Spanish] aera. Some record 28 September, others 12 October, but it was a Tuesday, in the year when the consuls were Honorius for the eighth time and Theodosius the son of Arcadius for the third time. (35) Alaric, the king of the Goths, entered Rome. Although there was slaughtrer inside and outside the city, sanctuary was granted to all who sought refuge in the shrine of the saints. (36) Placidia, the daughter of Theodosius and the sister of the emperor Honorius, was captured by the Goths in the city [of Rome]. (37) Alaric died and was succeeded as king by Athaulf. (38) The barbarians who had entered Spain pillaged it with vicious slaugther. (39) A pestilence wreaked its own devastation just as vigorously. |
