Text De origine Gothorum (Historia de regibus Gothorum, Vandalorum et Suevorum) (560 - 636) Isidore of Seville
Quotation Hermenegildum deinde filium imperiis suis tyrannizantem obsessum exsuperavit. postremum bellum Suevis intulit regnumque eorum in iure gentis suae mira celeritate transmisit, Spania magna ex parte potitus: nam antea gens Gothorum angustis finibus artabatur. sed offuscavit in eo error impietatis gloriam tantae virtutis.
Translation He then besieged his son Hermenegild, who was acting as a tyrant in his empire, and overcame him. Finally, he waged war against the Suevi and with amazing speed transferred their kingdom to the authority of his nation, gaining the mastery of most of Spain. For previously the nation of the Goths was limited within narrow boundaries. But the error of impiety obscured in him the glory of such virtue. (Trans. Donini and Ford, pp. 23-4)
