Comment This place in the carolingian Avaria is positioned where the Erlauf flows into the Danube, and had clearly defined borders with signs at trees, including the places Herlingoburg, the mountain Colomezza and Erdgastegi, none of which are unfortunately still findable in modern topographical names of the area. According to Herwig Wolfram, Die Bedeutung der Ortsnamenforschung für den Historieker, In: Siedlungsnamen und Siedlungsformen als Quellen zur Besiedlungsgeschichte Niederösterreichs (1986) p. 1-8 the names reflect the roman castrum arelape (Erdgastegi and Herlingoburg) and the Kulmberg (Colomezza), both near modern Pöchlarn; Ö. Ortsnamenbuch p. 204 state that Colomezza is the "Hochgreding" and p. 331 Erdgastegi near Ofling; also possible, though less likely, is the identification of the place "Harlanden" as the site of the ancient castle (http://noeburgen.imareal.sbg.ac.at/result/burgid/2511)
