De civitate Dei (413 - 427) Augustine of Hippo |
Quotation |
diceret nobis, utrum matrem suam tam optime de re publica uellet mereri, ut ei diuini honores
decernerentur; sicut et graecos et romanos aliasque gentes constat quibusdam decreuisse
mortalibus, quorum erga se beneficia magnipenderant, eosque inmortales factos atque in deorum
numerum receptos esse crediderant. |
Translation |
Let him tell us whether he would wish to see his own mother so highly esteemed by the commonwealth as to have such divine honours awarded her as the Greeks and the Romans and other nations have indeed voted to certain mortals whose services they greatly valued, and whom they believed to have been made immortal and admitted to the assembly of the gods.
