Text Gesta Hammaburgensis ecclesiae pontificum (1075 - 1076) Adam of Bremen
Translation And although other writers assert that either Gall in Alemannia, or Emmeram in Bavaria, or Kilian in Francia, or certainly Willibrord in Frisia had preached the Word of God earlier, he, like Paul the Apostle, nevertheless excelled all other in the zeal and assiduity of his preaching. For, as we read in his Gesta, with the support of the authority of the Apostolic See, he undertook a mission to the pagans and made the German peoples, among whom there now flourishes vigorously the greatest reverence for both the Roman Empire and the worship of God, renowned for their churches, their knowledge of the divine, and their virtues. He also organized their provinces as dioceses, namely those of the Franks on this side of the Rhine and those of the Hessians and Thuringians, who are the neighbours of the Saxons, uniting them with Christ and the Church as the first fruits of his labor, so to speak.
