Translation But by the judgement of God, on the day of his return, the aforementioned Pope died in the Castel Sant'Angelo, in the house next to the bronze gate; and was buried in the Basilica of Constantine, because the consuls did not permit him to be buried in the basilica of St Peter. In these times in the city of Rome three popes were elected and consecrated, by the clergy and the people in the part of Bishop Clement: that is the Bishop of St Rufina, in the basilica of St Peter, in secret at night they elected and consecrated him and placed him on the throne, but he did not dare to remain in the city; and having gone out of the city in order to go to the king, he was taken by the followers of Pope Paschal who sent him to Rome; and they sent him immediately to Puglia, to the monastery of the Holy Trinity, which is in Cava; and there he was made a monk. The other however, namely the Bishop of Sabina, they elected him in the Basilica of the Apostles. (Trans. Laura Gazzoli)
