Quotation |
Translation |
When the bishops saw what was happening, they groaned and cursed the wicked deed, and roared against the sacrilege. Many and innumerable slaughters were perpetrated against the citizens of Rome, and the King went away and the Lord Pope with him. The clerics were led out bound in ropes and were dragged behind the cavalry, whom they had to follow as best they could through the deep and sticky mud of the streets, from which they could scarcely emerge.
