Translation When he [Pope Honorius II] died, a schism arose in the Roman Church, for the greater and wiser party of cardinals chose Gregory, a Roman by nation, the cardinal deacon of Sant'Angelo, as pope, who was called Innocent II. But the other party of cardinals raised Peter, son of Pier Leoni, a noble citizen of Rome and cardinal deacon of San Nicolo in Carcere, to the papacy, who was called Anacletus [II]. As he had a wealth of resources from his parents, with their help and with luck he subjected the entire city to his dominion. (Trans. Laura Gazzoli)
