Translation [Ansgar] took the legation to the lands of the Swedes which the Emperor had laid upon him, to see whether that people were ready for the faith, just as the aforementioned messengers had said. Father Witmar, who I mentioned before, can better tell you how many grave evils he suffered on this legation, as he was there. For our purposes, it should suffice to say that nearly halfway through their journey, they ran into pirates. And although the merchants who were with them defended themselves bravely, and even at first gained a victory, in what ensued they were conquered and overcome by the same pirates, to such an extent that they robbed them of their ships and everything they had, and they themselves barely escaped by fleeing on foot to shore. And so there they lost all the royal gifts which they had had to take there, and everything they had, except for whatever little bit they could grab and carry with them as they jumped out of the ship.
