Gesta Swenomagni regis et filiorum eius et passio gloriossisimi Canuti regis et martyris (1111 - 1113) Ailnoth of Canterbury |
Quotation |
Fidem, quam gens Danica suscepit, in hodiernum illibatam conseruare et custodire Ihesu Christo fauente contendit. Suethi uero et Gothi rebus ad uotum fluentibus prosperisque succedentibus christianitatis fidem nomine tenus uenerari uidentur; at ubi aduersitatis aura, siue terrę infertilitate aerisue siccitate aut procellarum densitate, seu hostium incursione uel ignis adustione, inflauerit, fidei religionem, quam uerbo tenus uenerari uidebantur, non modo uerbis uerum rebus christianorumque fidelium persecutionibus insecuntur atque suis finibus omnino expellere conantur. Unde pię memorię Eskillinus episcopus, ex nobilissimo Anglorum orbe deueniens ibique euangelium fidei feris et indomitis gentibus denuncians, pro ueritatis testimonio barbarorum feritate et uesania transitorio sequestratus seculo angelis colletantibus superna adiit uicturus perpetuo. |
Translation |
The Danish people have exerted themselves, with the favour of Jesus Christ, to preserve and defend undiminished, to the present day, that faith which they then accepted. But as for the Swedes and the Goths: they make a show of paying reverence to the Christian faith in name as long as everything goes according to their wishes, and prosperity flows and blossoms; but when the wind of adversity blows, be it in the infertility of the soil, or a drought of the air, the dark clouds of storms, an incursion of an enemy or the flames of a fire, they persecute the faith which they seemed, nominally, to venerate; and not merely with words, but with deeds of persecution, they try to drive the Christian faithful completely out of their borders. Thus Bishop Eskillinus, of blessed memory, came from the most noble land of the Angles and there preached the gospel of faith to the wild and untamed peoples, and for his witness to the truth he was taken from this transitory world by the savagery and madness of the barbarians and went to eternal life in the joyous company of the Angels.
