Per idem tempus Swanus et Turkillus Danorum principes nonnullam terrae Anglorum maculam, exigentibus eorum peccatis, intulerunt. Swano tamen terribiliter divinitus occiso, Turkillus malignae haereditatis principatum sortitus, multas Angliae provincias caede et incendio vastabat. Rex namque Ethelredus imbellis, quia imbecillis, monachum potius quam militem actione praeseferebat: homines vero regionis divitiis corrupti, voluptatibus obligati, nec quidquam, praeter corporis et singulare et privatum commodum, honestum putabant. |

At the same time, the princes Sweyn and Thurkil brought no little defilement to the land of the English, driven by their sins. When Sweyn however had been killed terribly by divine vengeance, Thurkil, having inherited his malign authority, laid waste many provinces of England with fire and slaughter. For King Aethelred was unfit for war, as he was feeble, and in his action showed himself to be more monk than soldier: and the men of the region were corrupted by wealth and wedded to the pursuit of pleasure, and thought nothing worthy but one's own private bodily comfort.
