ϰαὶ οὕτως ἀτίμως ὁ Πέτϱος ἐϰεῖϑεν ἀνεχώϱησεν. ‖ πϱοπέμπει δὲ χιλίους ἐπὶ ϰατασϰοπῇ οἱ δὲ πεϱιτυγχάνουσι Βουλγάϱοις χιλίοις τὸν ἀϱιϑμόν. οἱ δὲ Βούλγαϱοι ϑαϱϱοῦντες τῇ εἰϱήνῃ τοῦ Χαγάνου ἐμεϱίμνως ἐβάδιζον· οἱ δὲ Ῥωμαῖοι πϱὸς τοὺς Βουλγάϱοϑς τὰς ὁϱμᾶς ἐποιοῦντο. οἱ δὲ Βούλγαϱοι ἀποστέλλουσιν ἄνδϱας ἑπτὰ παϱαινοῦντες μηνύουσι τῷ στϱατηγῷ ταῦτα. ὁ δὲ στϱατηγὸς ἔφη· “οὐδὲ εἰ ὁ αὐτοϰϱάωϱ παϱέλϑῃ, τούτων φείσιμαι.” συμβολῆς δὲ πολέμου γενομένης, τϱέπονται Ῥωμαῖοι. οἱ δὲ Βάϱβαϱοι οὐϰ ἐδίωξαν αὐτούς, ἵνα μὴ νιϰῶντες ϰινδύνῳ πεϱιπέσωσιν. ὁ δὲ στϱαϱηγὸς τὸν ταξίαϱχον τῶν πϱοτϱεχόνων χαλεπῶς ἐμαστίγωσεν. τοῦτο μαϑὼν ὁ Χαγάνος πϱέσβεις πϱὸς τὸν Πέτϱον ἐξέπεμψε τὴν ἔναϱξιν αἰτιώμενος, μαὶ ώς Ῥωμαῖοι ἄνεν διϰαίας αἰτίας τὴν εἰδήνην διέλυσαν. ὁ δὲ Πέτϱος ἀπατηλοῖς λάγοις χϱησάμενος μὴ εἰδέναι τὴν ϰίνησιν διϊσχυϱίζετο, διπλασίονα δὲ διδόναι τὰ σϰῦλα ἅπαντα· ϰαὶ οὕτως ἐν μοίϱαις δύο οἱ βάϱβαϱοι τὰ ἀναλαβόντες στέγουσι τὴν εἰϱήνην. |

Thus Peter retreated from there in disgrace.
He sent forward a thousand to reconnoitre. They encountered a thousand Bulgars. The latter, made confident by the Chagan’s peace, were advancing without any precautions. The Romans charged the Bulgars. The Bulgars sent out seven men to request that the peace not be broken. When the advance party heard this, they reported it to the general, who replied, ‘Not even if the emperor came here, would I spare them.’ A battle took place and the Romans were routed. The barbarians did not pursue them lest, after their victory, they should fall into danger. The general scourged the commander of the vanguard severely. When the Chagan learned this, he sent envoys to Peter accusing him of causing [the incident] and saying that the Romans had broken the peace for no just reason. Peter, with deceitful words, claimed that he knew nothing of the attack and that he would restore all the plunder twofold. So the barbarians, having regained double their lost plunder, kept the peace. |
