Translation |
[Justianian dispatched 300 armed men]
He handed to them Toudounos and Zoilos with instructions to reinstate them in their former positions at Cherson, to offer an apology to the Chagan through an ambassador, and to bring to him Elias and Bardanes. When these men had crossed over to Cherson, the inhabitants of the city of Cherson refused to treat with them. The next day the men of the city invited the leaders alone to come in and, after shutting the gates, put to the sword the logothete of the genikon and the prefect; as for Toudounos and Zoilos and the aforesaid turmarch together with the 300 soldiers, they handed them to the Chazars and sent them off to the Chagan. As Toudounos died on the way, the Chazars in his honour killed the turmarch along with the 300 soldiers. |
Summary |
Justinian II sends a group of 300 soldiers to return two men, called Toudounos and Zoilos here, to Cherson, where they are to be reinstated to their previous positions, asking for Elias and Bardanes to be returned to him. However, the men are not received by the inhabitants of Cherson and the group is handed over to the Chazars and killed. |
