Postquam Haroldus rex misit filium suum domitanti ad obsidem omnemque thesaurum, quem habuit, insuperque promisit illi censum dare, quem antea dedit, tunc cessavit imperator suae sevitiae, Haroldum in pace dimisit.
Translation The legates of Harold, whom they thought was resisting the Emperor [were present and] submitted all their [lands] to Otto’s power with the established tribute... Harold, king of the Danes, the instigator of evils, burnt and wasted the entire province north of the Elbe. When this had been announced to the Emperor Otto, he gathered together his army, going to Harold, and wanted to bring a great war upon him. But Harald sent his messengers to the Emperor and paid him all his wealth to leave him in peace. And the Emperor, angered by his messengers, returned to his realm, in order to gather such an army that none would be able to stand against it. After this, King Harald sent him his son (for the Emperor had tamed him) and all the wealth that he had, and on top of this promised to give him the tribute which he had given before, and then the Emperor’s anger ceased and he left Harald in peace.
