Sed ut somnii, Deo dispensante, inpleretur veritas, quod mater olim de eo se vidisse testatur, suae conscius voluntatis, licet adhuc divinae dispensationis ignarus, illas in partes navigare cogitavit et clarissima euangelicae praedicationis luce torpentes longa infidelitate populos, si Dei esset voluntas, inlustrare. Sed quia eadem gens Fresonum, in quo idem aedificatum est castellum, cum rege suo Rabbodo paganis adhuc ritibus sorduit, visum est viro Dei Franciam contendere ac ducem illorum adire Pippinum, virum strenuum, triumphis clarum et moribus probum. Qui eum cum omni honore suscipiens, sed nolens tanto doctore se vel suum privare gentem, loca ei oportuna intra terminos regni sui praevidens, quo potuisset idolatriae spinas exstirpare et purissima verbi Dei semina per munda novalia habundantius spargere, ut impleret propheticum illud praeceptum: Novate vobis novalia et nolite serere super spinas. |

Thus it was that, in fulfilment of the dream which his mother stated she had seen, Willibrord, fully aware of his own purpose but ignorant as yet of divine preordination, decided to sail for those parts and, if God so willed, to bring the light of the Gospel message to those people who through unbelief had not been stirred by its warmth. (...) But as the Frisian people, among whom the fort was situated, and Radbod, their king, still defiled themselves by pagan practices, the man of God thought it wiser to set out for Francia and visit Pippin, the king of that country, a man of immense energy, successful in war and of high moral character. The duke received him with every mark of respect; and as he was unwilling that he and his people should lose the services of so erninent a scholar, he made over to him certain localities within the boundaries of his own realm, where he could uproot idolatrous practices, teach the newly converted people and so fulfil the command of the prophet: " Drive a new furrow and sow no longer among the briars." (Jer. 4:3) |
