Translation a. 853 In the year of the Lord’s incarnation 853 the Northmen went round Brittany by sea and occupied the mouth of the River Loire. By means of a sudden assault they attacked the city of Nantes and destroyed everything with murder, pillage and fire. They killed the bishop of that town on the Sabbath of Holy Easter in the church while he was celebrating baptism in the usual way, and also slaughtered the clerics. Devastating the entire surrounding region, they occupied first Angers and then the town of Tours, and just as a monstrous storm destroys everything, so they consumed all. They also burned the temple of the most excellent bishop Martin with fire. This was the first time, so they say, that the Northmen’s fleet landed on the banks of the Loire.
