| Translation | Valens issued a law that monks should serve in the army, and he ordered that those who refused should be cudgelled to death.The people of the Huns, who had long dwelt secluded in inaccessible mountains, struck by sudden madness, burst forth against the Goths, andscattering themhither and thitherdrove them from their ancient settlements. The fugitive Goths, having crossed the Danube, were received by Valens without [being made to] lay down their arms. Soon they were driven to rebel because of the greed of general Maximus, and having defeated Valens’ army they spread abroad throughout Thrace, all the while perpetrating massacres, arson, and rapine.
