Translation His [Valentinian's] mother [Galla] Placidia was called Augusta. The ferocious race of the Vandals, the Alans, and the Goths, crossing from Spain into Africa, ravaged everything with fire, sword, rapine, and the Arian heresy. But the blessed Bishop Augustine of Hippo, the fore-most doctor of the Church, lest he see the ruin of his city, went to the Lord on the 5th kalends of September in the third month of the siege, having lived for seventy-six years and having completed nearly forty years in holy orders and as a bishop.
