Translation The family of the Merovingians, from which the Franks had been accustomed to make their kings, is considered to have lasted right down to King Childeric, who was deposed, tonsured, and forced into a monastery on the order of the Roman pontiļ¬€, Stephen. Although it might appear that the family came to its end in him, actually it had possessed no vitality for a long time already and could boast nothing better for itself than the empty title of king.
