  • Title Steppe Peoples 4: Aethicus Ister and the Cosmographer of Ravenna
    PI Salvatore Liccardo, Walter Pohl
Description Aethicus Ister and the Cosmographer of Ravenna are among the most enigmatic and fascinating authors of the Early Middle Ages. Dated to the late 7th or early 8th century, the Ravenna Cosmography discusses theoretical questions on the shape of the earth and preserves an extensive archive of toponyms and ethnonyms. Its medieval and Christian geography, which is however firmly anchored in the Greco-Roman tradition, deals with the steppe people, offering a framework in which to inscribe the newcomers and their migrations. The roughly contemporary Cosmography of Aethicus Ister includes a panoply of stereotypes on Eurasian nomads, which combines the Classical ethnographic discourse on the gentes inhabiting the margins of the oikumene with Christian eschatology and Biblical exegesis. Its extremely negative characterization of the ‘Turci’ will influence later geographical and cartographical traditions, contributing to the image of northern Eurasia as the homeland of Apocalyptic enemies.
