Annales Hersfeldensis (1077 - 1079) Lambert of Hersfeld |
Quotation |
Abbas Herveldensis reversus a Saxonibus retulit eos preter omnium opinionem mitia atque pacifica
Translation |
The estates of the monasteries of Fulda and Hersfeld were so weakened and exhausted by this devastation that it was with great difficulty that the brethren were restrained from leaving the monasteries as the food shortage grew worse.1108 On his return from the Saxons the abbot of Hersfeld reported that, contrary to the general belief, their response had been mild and peaceable. For they were not so devoid of reason and not so forgetful of the law of nations, which was widely known even among the barbarian peoples, that they did not know that envoys must not be injured even in the cruellest hostilities.1109 The Saxons had been compelled by extreme necessity to resort to warfare and they had not taken up arms to attack anyone but to defend themselves and to ward off injuries. If that necessity was removed, they would even now prefer peace to war and they would gladly put back their drawn swords into their sheaths. (Trans. Robinson) |
