Translation |
Under the leadership of Ambrosius Aurelianus - a man of modest means, who alone of the mighty Romans had survived the slaughter [inflicted] by the Saxons in which his parents, who had worn the purple, had been killed - the Britons goaded the victors into battle and defeated them. And from then on, first one side then the other had the palm, until the intruders, being stronger, gained possession of the whole island for along time. Anastasius [ruled for] 28 years. Trasamund the king of the Vandals closed the catholic churches and sent two hundred and twenty bishops into exile in Sardinia. (Trans. Faith, p. 223) |
