Hic itaque clerus accurrens ubi Octavianum in rubea cappa vidit, electum unanimi fratrum assensu
credidit, et ei velut electo acclamavit. Sed et fores basilicae disclusae sunt, et introgressi cives Romani ut erant armati, etiam ipsi Octaviani electioni acclamare ceperunt, omnia putantes esse peracta in pace. At vero domni cardinales cum suo electo videntes quae fiebant, in partem se receperunt sanctuarii;
deinde intra munitiunculam quae est supra sanctuarium se incluserunt, ibidem per 9 dies
exspectantes, donec tandem securitate accepta per cives Romanos extra Urbem educti sunt. |
| Translation |
And so here the clergy hastening to where they saw Octavian in the red cloak, believed he had been elected by the unanimous assent of the brethren, and acclaimed him as if he had been elected. But the gates of the basilica were closed, and citizens of Rome had gone in as they were armed, and they themselves began to acclaim the election of Octavian, thinking that everything had been done in peace. But when the lord cardinals saw what was happening with their elected, they took refuge in part of the sanctuary; and there they shut themselves in the small enclosure that is above the sanctuary, and there for nine days they waited, until finally when they had received guarantees of safe passage through the citizens of Rome were they led out of the city.
