Allegoriae quaedam sanctae Scripturae uel De nominibus legis et euangelii (601 - 700) Isidore of Seville |
Quotation |
Magi figuraverunt gentium populos, lucem fidei cognituros, indicantes sacramentorum
muneribus Christum, per thus esse Deum, per myrrham hominem passum atque sepultum, per
aurum regem omnium saeculorum.
143. Herodes, qui infantibus necem intulit, diaboli formam expressit, vel gentium, qui, cupientes
exstinguere nomen Christi de mundo, in caede martyrum saevierunt. |
Translation |
The Magi prefigured the peoples of the nations, destined to know the light of faith, indicating with their gifts the Christ of the sacraments: through the incense that he is God, through the myrrh that he is a man who suffered and died, through the gold that he is the king of all eternity. 143. Herod, who initiates the slaughter of the innocents, expresses the form of the devil, or of the nations who, desiring to extinguish the name of Christ from the world, rage in the slaughter of the martyrs. |
