Translation The most noble people of the English – who are distinct from the Old Saxons, from whom, by the testimony of their own historian, the Venerable Bede, they are descended – after their most valiant King Harald had been slain through the warlike traps of William, Duke of the southern Normans, and this same William had thereafter seized power over the English by force, had long been oppressed by the dominating rule of those same Romans or French whom we mentioned previously. They began to think that their former freedom4 would be restored to them, when they heard that the most glorious prince Cnut, with the forces of his army, was going to set sail for the shores of Britain in order to avenge the the murder of his kinsman King Harold, slain by these same Romans.
