Translation So, these rebellions having been put down, war was carried to the Slavs, whom we customarily call Wilzi but who are properly, that is, in their own language, called Welatabi. In that war, the Saxons fought as auxiliaries, just like the other peoples who followed the royal standard and command, although their obedience was feigned and less devoted. The cause of the war was that the Abotrits, who had earlier allied with the Franks, were suffering from constant attacks, and the Wilzi could not be compelled to stop by commands. A certain bay extends to the east from the Western Ocean. It is of unknown length, and its width never exceeds one hundred miles and is often much narrower. Many peoples live around it. The Danes and Swedes, whom we call Northmen, hold the northern shore and the islands along it. Slavs, Estonians, and various other peoples live along the eastern shore. The Welatabi were the most prominent among them, and it was against them that the king was commencing a war. In just one campaign, which he waged himself, Charles so smashed and dominated them that they never again thought of refusing to obey his commands. (Trans. Noble, 32)
