Translation ...again he began to burn deep in his spirit, so that he then gave whatever he had, if he could work anything in the lands of the Danes in the name of Christ. For this reason he strove to visit Horic more frequently, who then held sole power over the Danes, and and win him over with whatever gifts and obsequies he could, so that he could enjoy the freedom to carry out the office of a preacher in Denmark... And so when he had become close to the king, he began to urge him as well to become Christian... and in that port of his realm, most suitable for this purpose and closest to this region (Saxony), called Sliaswich, where merchants come from all round, there he permitted him to build a church, granting to him a place where a priest could reside; and also gave his permission that whoever in his realm who so wished could become a Christian. (Trans. Laura Gazzoli)
Summary Ansgar becomes close to King Horic I (d. 854) of the Danes and gains his permission for a church to be built at Schleswig/Hedeby with the permanent presence of a priest, as well as that whoever in his realm who so desired could become a Christian.
