Quotation	Μετὰ δὴ ταῦτα καὶ ὁ τῶν Ἀβάρων τοῦ ἔθνους ἡγεμὼν ἐπὶ συμβάσεσιν ὠς Ἡράκλειον ἐπικηρυκεύεται. ἐφ᾿ᾧ λίαν ὑπεραγάμενος δώροις αὐτὸν ἠμείβετο καὶ δὴ καὶ ἔπεμπεν ὡς αὐτὸν ἀγγελιαφόπους, Ἀθανάσιον τὸν πατρίκιον, εἶτα μετ᾿ αὐτὸν καὶ Κοσμᾶν τὴν ἀξίαν ἣν δὴ κυαίστορα καλοῦσι, τὰ τῆς βασιλέως \| γνώμης αὐτῷ ἀπεροῦντας. ὁ Ἄβαρος δὲ τὰ πρὸς φιλίαν ὑποκρινόμενος αἱμύλα τε καὶ ἐπαγωγὰ πρὸς αὐτοὺς ἀποφθεγγόμενος ὑπήγετο, ὡς φίλος εἴη Ῥωμαίοις, καὶ ἥκειν ὡς βασιλέα ἐπὶ σπονδαῖς ἐπήγγελτο. οἳ δὴ καὶ ἀναζεύξαντες τὰ τῆς εὐνοίας ἐκείνου ἔνδηλα βασιλεῖ ἐποίουν. οἷς ἄγαν ὑπερηδόμενος βουλεύεται εἰς τὴν πόλιν Ἡράκλειαν, καθ᾿ ἃ ἦν αὐτοῖς συγκείμενον, τῷ Ἀβάρῳ συμβαλεῖν. (…) τροσὶ δὲ ὕστερον ἡμέραις ὁ χαγάνος σὺν πλήθει πολλῷ τῶν Ἀβάρων ἀμφὶ τὴν Ἡράκλειαν παρῄει. (…) οἱ δὲ Ἄβαροι σὺν θυμῷ κατὰ τὴν δίωξιν ἐπετίθεντο, καὶ πρὸς τὸ πεδίον τὸ πρὸ τῆς πόλεως ὃ Ἕβδομον καλοῦσι καταλαβόντες ἱδρύσαντο. ἐνθένδε τε σκεδάννυνται ἄχρι καὶ εἰς τὴν τοῦ Βαρβύσσου παταμοῦ γέφυραν καὶ τὰ τῇδε χωρία πικρῶς κατεληΐξοντο καὶ τὸν Ῥωμαίων ὅμιλον ἀφειδῶς ἒκεράϊζον, (…)
Translation	After this, the chief of the Avar nation (Abárōn éthnos), too, sent a message to Herakleios with a view to <concluding> a treaty. The latter was greatly pleased at this and rewarded him with gifts. Furthermore, he sent ambassadors to him, namely, the patrician Athanasios and, in addition, Kosmas, who held the post of quaestor (as they call it), to make a statement of imperial polity. Putting on a mask of friendship, the Avar <chief> spoke to them wily and alluring words, pretending to be a friend of the Romans (Rhōmaîoi), and announced the he would meet the emperor so as <to conclude> a treaty. The ambassadors returned and reported to the emperor that man's friendly attitude. Greatly pleased at this, he decided to meet the Avar <chief> in the city of Herakleia as had been agreed. (...) Three days later the Chagan arrived before Herakleia with a great throng of Avars. (...)The Avars set out in hot persuit and reached the plain in front of the City that is called Hebdomon, where they encamped. Spreading out from there as far as the bridge of the river Barbysses, they grieviously devasted the settlements that are there and pitilessly slaughtered the Roman people.
Summary	The Avars attempt on the life of the emperor Heraclius in the city of Heraclea, about 60 km to the west from Constantinople. This event is narrated also by George Synkellos, the Chronicon Paschale, and Theophanes. The author emphasizes the deceitful behavior of the Chagan, who put on a mask of friendship.
