Once again Chosroes, king of Persia (ho tō̃n Persō̃n basileùs), made war on the Romans (Rhōmaíoi), having placed his army under the command of Sarbaros, who devasted all the eastern lands. (...) Finding himself troubled by both the Persians (Pérsai) and the Avars (Ábaroi), and the Roman State (politeías) hard pressed by famine and decimated by plague, Herakleios called in Sergios, the bishop of the City, along with the noblemen and the rest of the people, and placed his children in their care. |
Summary |
The Eastern Roman Empire is attacked by both Persians and Avars. Heraklios leaves the defense of the capital to the patriarch Sergius, the patrician Bonus, and his son Constantine III. |
