George Syncellus, who was an adviser of the patriarch of Constantinople in the early 9th century, reports on an invasion led by the Herules in 267. For this enterprise, the Herules assembled 500 ships
and sailed from the Maeotian Swamp towards Byzantium and Chrysopolis. For this raid, only
this source mentions the Herules, while both the Historia Augusta and Zosimus describe the
invaders either as Scythians or Goths. |
