Liutprand Leges Anni XVII (729 - 729) Liutprand |
Quotation |
Translation |
We have already before this time taken care to add to our ancient lawbook those provisions which we recognized to be pleasing to God and advantageous for our people… These new provisions have been agreed upon with our judges from Austria and Neustria, as well as from the bounds of Tuscany, and with the rest of our Lombard fideles…
(Emended from K. Fischer-Drew, trans., The Lombard Laws (1973), p. 189) |
Summary |
The Prologue to Liutprand’s laws from the seventeenth year of his reign (729 CE), do not explicitly name him as the law-giver. They outline the judges coming from Austria, Neustria and Tuscany as having contributed to the legal content and give the date that the laws were issued. The motivation for issuing the laws is on account of controversies that have arisen between people. |
