Translation It is now our concern to add to the body of our lawbook laws covering a few cases which have recently arisen and were found not to be covered in the edict before this time as a result of which our judges have found themselves in doubt when rendering a decision… (Emended from K. Fischer-Drew, trans., The Lombard Laws (1973), p. 207)
Summary The prologue to Liutprand’s laws from the twenty-second year of his reign (734 CE) begin by outlining that the laws have been issued as judges have been uncertain in specific areas when coming to decisions. The laws name Liutprand as law-giver and give the date that the laws were issued.
