τῷ δ’αύτῷ μηνὶ πϱεσβεύουσιν οἱ Ἄβαϱεις πϱὸς τὸν αὐτοϰϱάτοϱα Μαυϱίϰιον, οἲ πϱὸ ὸλίγου χϱόνου τὸ Σέϱμιον χειϱωσάμενοι, πόλιν τῆς Εὐϱώπης ἐπίσημον, ἠξίουν ταῖς ὀγδοήϰοντα χιλιάσι τοῦ χϱυσοῦ, αἷς ἐλάμβανον ϰατ’ ἔτος παϱὰ Ῥωμαίων, πϱοστεϑὴναι ἄλλας ϰ΄. ὁ δὲ βασιλεὺς εἰϱήνης ἐφιέμενος τοῦτο ϰατεδέξατο. ᾔτησε δὲ ϰαὶ ἐλέφαντα, ζῶον Ἰνδιϰόν, ἐϰπεμφϑῆναι αὐτῷ πϱὸς ϑέαν· ϰαὶ ὁ βασιλεὺ;τὸν μείζονα πάντων ἀπέστειλε πϱὸς αὺτόν· ϰαὶ τοῦτον ϑεασάμενος πἀλιν ἔπεμψεν αὐτὸν πϱὸς τὸν βασιλέα. ὁμοίς ϰαὶ ϰλίνην χϱυςῆν ᾔτησε σταλῆναι αὐτῷ· ὁ δὲ βασιλεὺς ϰαὶ ταύτην ὰπέστειλεν, αὐτὸς δὲ ϰαὶ ταύτην ἀπέστϱεψεν εὐτελίσας αὐτήν. ᾔτει δὲ πάλιν ἄλλας ϰ΄ χιλιάδας πϱοστεϑῆναι ταῖς ϱ΄ τοῦ δὲ βασιλέως μὴ ϰαταδεξαμμένου, στϱατεύσας ὁ Χαγάνος τὴν Σιγγιδόνα πόλιν ϰατέστϱεψε ϰαὶ πολλὰς ἑτέας πόλεις ἐχειϱώσατο τὰς ὑπὸ τὸ Ἰλλυϱιϰὸν τελούσας. Παϱέλαβε δὲ ϰαὶ τὴν Ἀγχίαλον, ἠπείλει δὲ ϰαὶ τὰ Μαϰϱὰ τείχη ϰαταστϱέψαι. ‖ ὁ δὲ βασιλεὺς Ἐλπίδιομτὸν πατϱίϰιον σὺν Κομεντιόλῳ πϱέσβεις πϱὸς τὸν Χαγάνον ἐξαπέστειλεν. ϰαὶ ὁ βάϱωαϱος ἐπὶ ταῖς τῶν πάϰτων συνϑήϰαις εἰϱήνην ἄγειν ϰαϑωμολόγησεν. |

In the same month the Avars sent an embassy to the emperor Maurice. A little earlier they had captured Sermium, a notable city in Europe, and now demanded that the 80,000 gold pieces which they received annually from the Romans should be increased by another 20,000. The emperor, out of eagerness for peace, accepted this. [The Chagan] asked for an elephant, an Indian animal, to be sent to him so he could look at it. The emperor sent to him the largest one of all. After gazing at it, the Chagan sent it back to the emperor. Likewise he asked for a golden bed to be sent to him. The emperor sent it and again the Chagan returned it after disparaging it. He then asked for another 20,000 to be added to the 100,000. When the emperor refused, the Chagan marched out, destroyed the city of Singidunum and captured many other cities belonging to Illyricum. He seized Anchialos and threatened to destroy the Long Walls. The emperor sent out the patrician Elpidios with Komentiolos as ambassadors to the Chagan. The barbarian vowed to keep the peace in accordance with the terms of the treaty. |
