Occulto quoque Dei iudicio qui olim per prophetam dixerat: Ecce ego suscitabo super uos Chaldaeos gentem amaram et uelocem, ambulantem super latitudinem terrae, ut possideat tabernacula non sua, cuius equi uelociores lupis uespertinis et facies eorum, (ut) uentus urens, da arguendos fideles et terram in solitudinem redigendam, nocere eos permittit. Primum namque fratrem imperatoris qui illius terrae dicionemtenebat, interimunt, et ob tantum triumphum uictoriae glorioso effecti, apud Damascum Syriae urbem regni principium fundauerunt. |
| Translation |
God, with his inscrutable judgment (who once said through his prophet: "For behold I will raise up the Chaldeans, a bitter and swift people, wandering over the breadth of the earth, to possess the tents that are not their own, whose horses are swifter than evening wolves, and their appearance like the burning wind, reducing the land to emptiness as a demonstration to the faithful") permitted them to inflict injury. First they killed the brother of the emperor who held dominion over the land and in recognition of the triumph of victory, they established the Syrian city of Damascus as the capital of the kingdom.
