Τούτῳ τῷ ἔτει ἐϰίνησαν οἱ Βούλγαϱοι, δύο ῥῆγες μετὰ πλήϑους Βουλγάϱων ϰαὶ δϱούμμου, εἰς τὴν Σϰυϑίαν ϰαὶ Μυσίαν, στϱατηλάτου ὄντος ἐξελϑόντες ϰατὰ τῶν Βουλγάϱων συνέβαλου πόλεμον, ϰαὶ ἐσφλαγη Ἰϑυστῖνος ὁ στϱατηλάτης ἐ τῷ πολέμῳ, ϰαὶ ἐγένετο ἀντ’αὐτῦ Κωνσταντῖνος ὁ Φλωϱεντίου· ϰαὶ ἧλϑον οἱ Βούλγαϱοι ἔως τῶν μεϱῶν τῆς Θϱᾴϰης. ϰαὶ ἐξῆλϑε ϰατ’ αὐτῶν ὁ στϱαϱηλάτης Κωνσταντῖνος ϰαὶ Γώδιλας ϰαὶ [ἀϰούσας] ὁ στϱατηλάτης τοῦ Ἰλλυϱιϰοῦ, Ἀϰοὺμ ὁ Οὖννος, ὅν ἐδέξατο ὁ βασιλεὺς ἀπὸ τοῦ βαπυίσματος· ϰαὶ μέσον βαλόντες τοὺς Βουλγάϱους $ἔϰοχαν αὐτοὺς ϰα ἀπέϰτειναν πλήϑη πολλά, ϰαὶ ἐξετίναξαν πᾶσαν τὴν πϱαῖδαν ϰαὶ ἐνίϰησαν ϰατὰ ϰϱάτος φονεύσαντες ϰαὶ τοὺς δύο ῥῆγας αὐτῶν. ϰαὶ ἐν τῷ ὑποστϱέφειν αὐτοὺς μετὰ χαϱᾶς ὑπήντησαν αὐτοῖς ἄλλοι Βούλγαϱοι, ϰαὶ ὡς ἀπὸ ϰόπου ὄντες οἱ στϱατηλάται δέδωϰαν αὐτοῖς νῶτα, ϰαὶ ϰατεδίωξαν αὐτοὺς οἱ Βούλγαϱοι ϰαὶ ἐσώϰισαν αὐτοὺς φεύγοντας, Κωνσταντῖνον ϰαὶ τὸν Ἀϰοὺμ ϰαὶ Γώδιλαν. ϰαὶ ὁ μὲν Γώδιλας μετὰ τοῦ παϱαμηϱίου αὐτοῦ ϰόψας τὸν σῶϰον ἐξείλησεν, ὁ δὲ Κωνσταντῖνος σὺν τῷ Ἀϰοὺμ συνελήφϑησαν ζῶντες. ϰαὶ τὸν μὲν Κχνσταντῖνον δέδωϰαν λαβόντες χίλια νομίσματα, ϰαὶ ἦλϑεν ἐν Κωνσταντινουπόλεο, τὸν δὲ Ἀϰοὺμ ἐϰϱάτησαν ειἰς τὴν ἰδίαν πατϱίδα μετὰ ϰαὶ ἄλλων αἰχμαλώτων. |

AM 6031 (538/9) (pp. 316-317)
In this year the Bulgars, namely two kings with a great force of Bulgars and a troop of cavalry, invaded Scythia and Mysia. At the time Justin was magister militam [!] in Mysia and Badouarios in Scythia. They marched out against the Bulgars and clashed with them. Justin was killed in battle and Constantine, son of Florentius, replaced him. The Bulgars advanced as far as the districts of Thrace. Constantine, the magister militum, went against them, as did also Godilas, and Akoum the Hun, magister militum per Illyricum, for whom the emperor had stood as baptismal sponsor. Surrounding the Bulgars, they cut them down and killed a great mass of them, stripped them of all the booty, and gained a complete victory, even killing their two kings. As they were returning joyfully, other Bulgars met them, and as the magistri militum were weary, they turned their backs in retreat. The Bulgars gave chase and lassoed Constantine, Akoum, and Godilas as they fled. Godilas cut the lasso with his dagger and slipped out, but Constantine and Akoum were captured alive. They gave back Constantine for a payment of 1,000 nomismata, and he came to Constantinople, but they held Akoum in their own country with other captives. |
| Summary |
Bulgarian invasion of Scythia and Moesia, resulting in the death of the magister militum of Moesia, Justin, and leading the Bulgars as far as Thrace. There, they are attacked by the magister militum Constantine and beaten, but after this victory, the Romans are attacked by other Bulgars and the dignitaries are caught, with one of them breaking free, one being ransomed and one held. |
