Translation |
a. 883 In the year of the Lord’s incarnation 883 King Louis [III] the brother of Carloman [II] died at St-Denis and was buried there with honour. All the people of the Gauls lamented him with great wailing. For he was a man of courage and he defended the kingdom placed under him from the infestation of the pagans powerfully and manfully. Among the other things which he vigorously accomplished, particularly noteworthy was that outstanding battle which he fought with the greatest strength
against the Northmen in the place called Saucourt. In this engagement, so they say, he cut down more than 8,000 of the enemy with the sword. His brother Carloman received his kingdom. |
