Quotation |
a. 883 Circa haec tempora Hugo filius Lotharii in spem recuperandi ... |
Translation |
a. 883 Around this time, Hugh the son of Lothar [II] was led into the hope of regaining his father’s kingdom by some devotees of discord and quarreling. Everyone who hated peace and justice flooded to him so that in a few days a countless multitude of bandits had placed themselves under his command. Seduced by vain hope, several of the kingdom’s leading men joined them by offering their hands, namely Counts Stephen, Robert, Wigbert, Theutbald, and Alberic and his brother Stephen. Such plunder and violence was committed in the kingdom by these people that there was no difference between their wickedness and that of the Northmen, except that they refrained from murder and burnings. Thus almighty God was enraged at the kingdom of Lothar and began to act against and to utterly destroy the strength of that same kingdom by increasing disasters of such a kind that the prophecy of the most holy Pope Nicholas, and also the curse which he had pronounced over this kingdom, was fulfilled. |
