Translation Certain primores of the Franks and the Saxons were sent from this assembly across the river Elbe to the borders of the Northmen; their mission was to make peace with them, as their kings had requested, and to restore the kings' brother. An equal number of primates of the Danes - there were sixteen - met them at the appointed place, and peace was confirmed by oaths from both sides and the kings' brother handed over. However, the kings were not at home at this time but had gone with an army to Vestfold - the region situated in the furthermost north-west of the kingdom, looking across to the northern tip of Britain - the princes and people of which were refusing submission to them. When they returned after subjugating them and received their brother, sent by the emperor, the sons of king Godfred and not a few of the primores of the Danes, men who had left their homeland a long time before and been in exile among the Swedes, gathered forces together from wherever they could and made war on them. The people flocked to them in throngs from far and wide, from all the lands of the Danes, and after engaging the kings in battle they drove them out of the kingdom without great effort. (Trans. King, p. 106)
