Translation If anyone wants to give his property to another, he should not make the gairethinx [gift] secretly but in the presence of freemen. He who thingat [makes the gift] and he who receives the gisel [gift] should be free in order that no controversy may arise in the future. (Emended from K. Fischer-Drew, trans., The Lombard Laws (1973), p. 82)
Summary Rothari, No. 174 establishes that once ownership of an item has been given away, the person who give it cannot then give it to somebody else, unless the original recipient was a son who has been disinherited.
