Translation In the name of God Almighty, I, Liutprand, most excellent king of the most happy and Catholic, favored by God, nation of the Lombards… in a like manner with God willing and together with all our judges from the regions of Austria and Neustria as well as from the bounds of Tuscany, and together with the rest of our Lombards, we with foresight add thcse provisions which we believe to be pleasing to God… (K. Fischer-Drew, trans., The Lombard Laws (1973), pp. 146-47)
Summary The prologue to Liutprand’s legislation issued in the fifth year of his reign (717 CE), begins by identifying Liutprand as the law-giver and king of the Lombards, before continuing to give the date and to refer back to his previous legislative session in the first year of his reign. The prologue confirms that the laws were issued alongisde the consent of all the judges from austria, neustria and tuscany, as well as all of “our” Lombards.
