Translation If a Lombard wishes to give his wife a morgincap (morning gift) at the time he marries her, we decree that before the marriage in the presence of friends and relatives he should announce the gift by means of a written instrument confirmed by witnesses… (Emended from K. Fischer-Drew, trans., The Lombard Laws (1973), p. 147)
Summary Liutprand, No. 7 establishes that if a man gives his wife a morning gift [morgincap, morgengab], then it should also be confirmed with a witnessed document in order that she not lose the gift later through perjury. The law then goes on to limit the ammount of property that can be given as part of the morgincap to a maximum of one quarter of the husband’s property.
